Resistant Gonorrhea Strain: Research News

A strain of gonorrhea that is resistant to antibiotics that are available currently has been Strain of Gonorrhea found is resistant to all antibiotics currently availablefound by a research team. The new resistant strain has the possibility to transform common and once easily treated infection into threat to public health globally.

The research team was successful in identifying an unknown variant of the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae that can cause gonorrhea.

Analyses of this new strain of gonorrhea that has been dubbed H041 allowed researchers in identifying the genetic mutations that are responsible for the extreme resistance of the bacterium to all cephalosporin-class antibiotics which are the drugs that are still effective in gonorrhea treatment.

Gonorrhea is known to be one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases around the world. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the U.S. alone, the number of gonorrhea cases count around seven million per year.

Gonorrhea is without symptoms in about fifty percent of infected women & approximately two to five percent of men. Gonorrhea symptoms are characteristic and represented by a burning sensation during urination and discharge of pus from genitals.

In absence of gonorrhea treatment it can lead to health complications that are serious and irreversible in both men & women.

In women, the gonorrhea infection can cause ectopic pregnancy & chronic pelvic pain. It can also lead to a condition of infertility mostly in women and also in men. It can also increase risk for HIV transmission.

In gonorrhea cases ranging from three to four percent, gonorrhea infection when left untreated can spread to the blood, skin, joints or even the heart. It can cause lesions that can prove potentially mortal.

Babies born to infected mothers are exposed to a high risk of developing blood and joint infections that are serious. It can cause blindness in infants passing through the birth canal of an infected mother.

Noted Dr. Unemo of the Swedish Reference Laboratory for Pathogenic Neisseria “this is both an alarming and a predictable discovery since antibiotics have become standard treatment for gonorrhea since 1940 this bacterium has displayed a remarkable capacity in developing resistant mechanism towards all drugs available to control it.”

Dr. Unemo continued, “While it is still too early to assess if this new strain has become widespread, the history of newly emergent resistance in the bacterium suggests that it may spread rapidly unless new drugs and effective treatment programs are developed”.
