Unveiling the Health Benefits of Garlic and Uses as Medication

Folk wisdom has it that eating garlic fights ailments has become ancient talk. Now, it is a Garlic Medicinal Uses proved as Remedy against Diseasesmore modern time and environment. People are more aware of evil side effects of synthetic chemical food preservatives and the health benefits of fruit and vegetable extracts.

Natural garlic extract has proven scientific backing about it possessing properties that help inhibit growth of pathogenic & health damaging microorganisms, and further are actually being evaluated as food preservatives.

A team of researchers from Washington State University has found that a group of garlic derived organo sulfur compounds has much greater antimicrobial activity than the formal & originally used garlic derived phenolic compounds.

The research has been published recently in an issue of the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

Says coauthor Lu, “The novelty of this paper is that we found that diallyl sulfides contribute more to antimicrobial activity of garlic extract than do phenolic compounds. We used biophysical techniques, namely infrared and Raman spectroscopy, to demonstrate that diallyl sulfide can freely penetrate bacterial membranes and combine with sulfur containing proteins and enzymes, which is the major antimicrobial mechanism of these organo sulfur compounds.”

Further, he states, “This is the first time researchers have combined infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, which are complementary techniques, to study the mechanisms of bacterial injury and inactivation. While previous studies have validated that volatile thiosulfinates, a group of intermediate, unstable and volatile bioactive sulfur-containing compounds, have antimicrobial activity against Helicobacter pylori, our result demonstrated that the garlic derived organo sulfur compounds have the potential to be used as antimicrobial agents.”

Campylobacter jejuni is the base microbe targeted in this study, thought to be one of the most prevalent causes of bacterial food-borne illness in the world.

It is said to cause abdominal cramps, fever & diarrhea that is accompanied by gross blood and leukocytes.

There is a dearth of investigation into this particular area as there are no previous reported studies investigating the ability of allium species that includes garlic, to control the growth of C. jejuni.

Says Lu, garlic uses includes a long history of its beneficial effects in fighting disease that goes back several thousand years. This part of history about garlic uses probably contributed to the notion that garlic could repel vampires. In ancient society people were used to eating garlic to cure diseases. However, they had no knowledge about its working in curing ailments. This is what the research team is trying to find out, scientifically & in detail.
