Astraphobia – Fear of Thunder and Lightning

Astraphobia is an abnormal fear of loud thunder and flash lightning. It is a very specific Astraphobia is the Fear of Thunder and Lightningtype of phobia which can make you take extreme and sometimes stupid measures to avoid facing a feared situation.

Most people with fear of thunder and Lightning look for additional or novel type of shelters, beyond regular storm protection. One may conceal under a table or bed. A closet, bathroom or a basement may be viewed as more secure to other forms of protection.

Know Astraphobia Causes

Small children are particularly more vulnerable, and fear thunder and lightning to a greater degree. As such, children fear many things, and it is an essential part of their development.

If a child’s fear is persistent and does not cease within six months, they are diagnosed with a phobia, not otherwise.

Getting traumatized following a storm or hearing frightening incidents about thunderstorms during childhood can become valid astraphobia causes.

For the duration of a storm, an astraphobe is most likely to get upset and feel agitated and start to display weird behavior. This phobia can occur in animals, such as dogs. They tend to get intensely fearful of storms and may howl and whine in response.

Identify Astraphobia Symptoms

Astraphobia can elicit responses similar to other phobias. You may want continuous support & assurance during a storm. But symptoms often get heightened in those who are alone.

Some of the astraphobia symptoms:

  • Sweating
  • Shaking
  • Trembling
  • Fast heartbeats
  • Crying
  • Screaming

These symptoms can occur at the time of a thunderstorm or prior to it. You may wrap a towel or curtain around your ears to gag out the sounds of thunder. You may become obsessed with weather forecasts, continually monitoring the latest weather updates to look out for clues about any threat of impending storms.

Astraphobia Treatment

A very treatable phobia, sessions with a mental health professional can help minimize or overcome the fear. A therapist will talk and work with the patient to identify the root cause of the phobia.

Systematic desensitization is a technique used in astraphobia treatment. The patient is gradually exposed to sounds of thunder and lightning. The patient observes how nothing harms him physically upon being subjected to such experiences, and over time, learns to confidently manage his fear.
