What is Pyrophobia?
The overwhelming fear of fire is known as pyrophobia. People with this fear may dread even a small flame & perceive it as a threat to their personal safety.

Just as in other phobias, a traumatic event in the past is often the cause that creates a negative response in the subconscious mind of the affected individual. Such a response is usually a form of defense mechanism that arises during anxiety filled situations.
Exact pyrophobia causes can surface during a talk with a therapist which in some cases may remain unidentified. But in many cases this phobia may get rooted following a negative experience or traumatic event at some point of life.
A pyrophobe may have a negative outlook or perception regarding events that might be associated with a feared situation involving fire or flames.
Identify Pyrophobia Symptoms
People with this type of phobia may go to any length and take abnormal measures to shield & protect themselves from any threat of fire.
They try to make sure they are equipped with an escape route, in case a fire breaks out, smoke alarms & fire extinguishers.
Generally, pyrophobia symptoms are associated and largely mimic those of anxiety disorders which can compromise a person’s ability to function logically in any type of stressful situation.
Some of those affected may feel uncomfortable in the vicinity of fire. Others may find their heart rate increasing and may also start to panic or tremble with fear.
Those with an aggravated or severe form of this phobia may start to feel nauseous, suffocate, experience full blown anxiety, panic or run away from the site of fire or may even faint.
Left untreated, people with this phobia may spend their entire life trying to avoid fire. The symptoms can respond to pyrophobia treatment available such as psychotherapy, exposure therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy.
In some cases anti-depressants may bring about a reduction in severity of symptoms. For any therapy to work, it is important to talk openly with a therapist.
The main aim here would be to identify the source of your fear such as an event or an experience that lead to cause fear of fire. Bad memories or experiences involving fire may need to be etched out to gain back confidence.
